Whats the difference with 4x4 Tyres?
4x4 tyres are designed for vehicles that are used off-road, and have a wider tread pattern than standard car tyres. They are designed to provide better grip and traction in muddy, grassy, or snowy conditions. All 4x4 tyres have a wider tread pattern with larger tread blocks and deeper grooves and have reinforced sidewalls and tread caps to help prevent punctures.
Different types of 4x4 Tyres for Specific needs :
- All-terrain: The most popular choice for 4x4 tyres, designed for 60% road and 40% off-road use
- Mud terrain: Designed for off-road driving, with large gaps between the tread blocks to help prevent getting stuck
- On-Road Use: Designed for 90% on-road and 10% off-road use
If you spend more time driving on the road than off-road, you may want to consider all-terrain or on-road tyres.
4x4 Tyre Technology
One of the most significant advancements in 4x4 tyre technology has been the development of specialised tread patterns. Early off-road tyres featured uniform, blocky treads that were adequate for basic traction but did not perform well in diverse conditions. Over time, tyre manufacturers began to experiment with different tread geometries, leading to the introduction of directional treads that optimize mud expulsion and multi-angled grooves that improve grip on slippery surfaces.
The composition of the rubber compounds used in 4x4 tyres has also evolved significantly. Initially, manufacturers relied on relatively hard compounds that offered durability but compromised on flexibility and traction. The introduction of synthetic rubber compounds marked a turning point, providing an optimal balance between toughness and elasticity.
Why is it important not to mix 4x4 Tyres to your AWD vehicle?
It is not recommended to use different types of tyres on the same axle of any vehicle. This is particularly important for 4x4s, as the front and rear tyres should also match. The reason is that 4x4s have a “transfer box” that distributes power between front and rear axles. If different tread patterns are used, it can result in different rotational speeds, putting strain on the transfer box. This can ultimately lead to transfer box failure.
